I've been in Amateur Radio since 1974, and still find new and interesting things to do. I like to build, restore, and operate on the air. This blog has been running for many years, so be sure to check out "Jump to Posts on Specific Topics" in the RH column to drill down and find lots of stuff. This is s Kenwood TS-530S that a friend got from an estate. Its unclear when it was on the air last, but it came to me almost dead. Practically no recieve or transmit, and with a number of issues typical of an older rig that had been parked for a while. New HV filter caps, serviced all controls and switches, repairs to the I.F. board, repairs to the so-239 connector, cleaned the VFO rotor and ground tab, mods to the hv supply & calibrator circuit, 6146 finals swap, and a full alignment brought this baby to life! Here's a few vids and pics...
Cleaning the rf attenuator switch...
After lubrication, this allows for easy spinning of the VFO knob.
The band switch has so much backlash, it would literally rotate off contact.
The shaft coupling for the rear bandswitch section was loose.
1.5mm Allen wrench for tightening the shaft coupler.
Removing the OEM hv filter caps...
Fabricating mounts for the new capacitors.
New caps in place...
HV now just under 1000vdc.
New cap stack in the doubler allows headroom of 1800vdc.
Nice CW pattern with new caps, no AC ripple...
Busted nut on the SO-239...
New hex nut installed...
Added red wire to power isolation relay addition for calibrator...
