This is a TenTec VFO from a Century 21. They call it a "PTO", for permeability tuned oscillator. These were also used by Collins and others. They're a very mechanical device, and usually falter due to contaminated lubricants and mechanical lock-up. Kept clean and properly lubricated, they're amazingly solid performers. Here's one I "rebuilt" for a Century 21...
